Heritage Months

A calendar turned to the month of May Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month has a long history of observance in the United States beginning in 1979 with joint actions by Congress and President Carter to recognize Asian/Pacific Heritage Week in May.

President Carter and Congress were also the first to celebrate Jewish American Heritage Week in 1980

Congratulations, Graduates!

We look forward to seeing our graduates at commencement on May 17! If you attend graduation, you may notice that the faculty member leading the procession carries a large wooden mace. This graduation tradition dates back to the middle ages in Europe, when maces were carried by knights as weapons to protect important people. Gradually over time, the mace became a ceremonial object, representing power and authority. In the United States, most colleges and universities include one in ceremonial events such as graduation. In the picture below, Professor Mike Harsh carries the HCC mace. This year's mace carrier will be Dr. Bernard Murphy.
