The United Nations has designated August 9th as International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. It is estimated 476 million indigenous people across the world and approximately 200 groups currently live in voluntary isolation and initial contact. This year the UN is highlighting the delicate balance these groups rely on to preserve their cultures and languages. The rights to Indigenous People's autonomy are protected by the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples but a variety of factors greatly threaten their way of life, including but not limited to agriculture, mining, tourism, and disease.
Want to learn more about indigenous peoples' rights and learn how to advocate for them? This UN Human Rights Office e-learning tool is free and includes an entire online course. You can also check out one of the library's books written by indigenous authors. Select titles include A Council of Dolls by Mona Susan Power and Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange.
Visit the library's International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples for more information about indigenous people around the world
