Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI): January

January Highlights

Happy New Year!

January 1 rings in the new year - 2025. Remember to take an extra second while writing dates in the next few weeks!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Poverty Awareness Month

Make Poverty HistoryAlong with his famed work on civil rights, Martin Luther King, Jr. also worked to draw attention to and empower Americans below the poverty line, whatever their race might be. He believed that a civilized society would be able to eliminate poverty and identified materialism as one of the "giant triplets" of evil. During the month of January, National Poverty in America Awareness month highlights the struggles still faced by millions of Americans.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Campus Celebration

I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture of their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.

--Martin Luther King, Jr.

HCC’s annual celebration honoring Dr. King’s legacy will be observed during the week of January 20 - 24, 2025. It will focus on Dr. King's message through a variety of presentations, activities and discussions.

See the full schedule on the HCC MLK Jr. Celebration page.

Lunar New Year Celebration
January 29Snake icon

Lunar New Year is celebrating the beginning of a new year and a chance at some good luck! Come and join us in the Student Center main dining room for some fun, music, food and more. This year is specifically the year of the wooden snake. In Chinese mythology, the snake is associated with malevolence and mystery, and finding a snake is considered a sign of good luck. People born during a wooden snake year (every 60 years) are considered to be calm, creative, and logical. Learn more at HCC's celebration.
