Spotlight on Jewish and Asian History in Maryland Newspaper article with the headline, Freshman Elect Dormir, Haugh

In honor of Jewish American and Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are taking a look at some local history.

Jewish communities started to form in Maryland between 1830 and 1920. In those 90 years, approximately 65,000 Jewish people settled in Maryland. One of the earliest documented Jewish settlers was from 1657, Jacob Lombrozo, a physician. The Jewish Virtual Library provided highlights of early settlers and links to histories of Jewish people around the world.

In 1965, Umesh Domir was elected as Student Government Freshman class president at Hagerstown Junior College. He was born in New Delhi, India and moved to the US when his father became a US diplomat for India. According to student newspapers, he introduced numerous social and political topics to students around the college and encourage discussion about the then current war between Pakistan and Kashmir.

Congratulations, Graduates!

Ever wonder why you have to wear a such an odd hat at graduation? The graduation cap dates back to the medieval period but the styles we see today can be officially dated to the late 1800's. They are representative of your academic achievement and all the hard work you have put in.

Once finals are over - take a breath! Take a moment to learn what the fancy outfit on graduation is all about in this short history bite from the Intercollegiate Registry of Academic Costume.

We can't wait to see all our graduates in their full graduation gear, decorated or not, at commencement on May 18!
