Meet the Panelists! 

Photo of Dr. BeecroftDr. Rebecca Beecroft is a retired Associate Professor of Life Science, Biotechnology, and Environmental Studies at Hagerstown Community College, with over 22 years of experience in environmental education. The founder of the Environmental Studies program at HCC, she continues to teach one course, Public Health and the Environment, as an adjunct at HCC. A life-long outdoor enthusiast, she was newly elected to the Sierra Club Washington County Group executive committee in the fall of 2020.

Photo of Michael BrandtMichael Brandt is a professional author residing in Hagerstown, MD. A founding member of the Sierra Club Washington County Group, he currently serves as Vice Chair of the group’s Executive Committee and is a delegate of the Maryland State Sierra Club Executive Committee. An ardent supporter of the environment, he is presently involved in leading the local Zero Waste initiative and is active in petitioning for better environmental laws at the state and national level, most recently in promoting the passage of the Maryland single-use plastic bag ban bill.

Photo of Tony DruryAnthony (Tony) Drury is the Recycling Coordinator/Operations Supervisor at the Washington County Landfill. In this capacity, he oversees all recycling activities at the landfill, provides educational outreach to schools, civic groups and other organizations, and works with citizens and businesses to provide recycling solutions.  He currently serves on the Maryland Recycling Network Board, and also acts as the County liaison for the Boonsboro Green Fest.

Photo of Peggy MothershedPeggy Mothershed is a dual major in Environmental Studies and Political Science at Hagerstown Community College, a clear reflection of her interest in environmental science and politics.  An active participant in local environmental efforts, Peggy believes that individual and collective actions are key components to a more sustainable future.  In the fall of 2020, Peggy was appointed to the Sierra Club Washington County Group as a student representative.

Photo of Dr. SchwartzDr. Eric Schwartz teaches political science and environmental policy at Hagerstown Community College, where he is the Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations. A founding member of the Sierra Club Washington County Group, he currently serves as the Chair of the group’s executive committee. A passionate advocate for the environment, he also has an interest in mycology, herpetology and geology.

GreenFest Swap and Recycling Event, May 15th, Shafer Park Boonsboro

The Boonsboro Green Fest's Swap & Recycling event will be held this year on Saturday, May 15 at Shafer Park. Stop by to drop off recycling, swap for other materials, or donate items.
