Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI): February

February Highlights

Douglass Day & Black History Month - With a Local TwistImage of Fredrick Douglass with words Douglass Day 2024

Although Frederick Douglass never knew his exact birthdate, he chose to celebrate his birthday each year on February 14. Because of his significance and influence in African American culture, this date became an anchor for many celebrations of Negro History Week, a predecessor of Black History Month.

Celebrate Douglass Day 2024 on February 14 by participating in a transcribe-a-thon/birthday party. The William M. Brish Library, partnered with the Washington County Free Library, will be hosting a livestreamed program in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) 122 12-3pm. Across the nation attendees will be transcribing Frederick Douglass's correspondences to make them more accessible for researchers.

Celebrating on Campus
Chinese New Year Celebration

February 6

Ring in the Year of the Dragon in the Student Center on Tuesday, February 6 at 2:30pm. Snacks and drinks will be available. This year is specifically the year of the wooden dragon. In Chinese mythology, the dragon is associated with success and intelligence. People born during a wooden dragon year (every 60 years) are considered to have high energy and drive. Learn more at the HCC's celebration.
