July is Disability Pride Month in honor of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which was passed on July 26, 1990. The Disability Pride flag (pictured left, a rectangle with a black background and stripes in red, yellow, white, blue and green run from the top left corner to the bottom right) ) was designed by Ann Magill. The colors represent the diverse disability community population and the different aspects of disability or impairment. The Arc Maryland is the largest statewide nonprofit dedicated to individuals with intellectual and developmental differences and their families. Through a network of over 8,000 members they promote public policy, advocacy, public awareness, and training. Local chapters have a wide variety of services included but not limited to adult residential services, employment services and personal support services.

HCC provides reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and its amendments. The Disability Support Services (DSS) Office coordinates the provision of accommodations which are determined on an individual basis.
To get more information visit our Disability Support Services webpage and make an appointment. In post-secondary education, it is important to self-advocate because accommodations from K-12 schools do not automatically carry over.
Since students with disabilities tend to have specific needs, selecting the appropriate college may present a challenge. Before applying, it's important to learn if the school meet the student's needs. Take the time to explore whether it is inclusive, accessible, and accepting of those with disabilities.
